Message from the Board – Joe Watts, President

It’s that time of the year when we are almost in the habit of writing the date for the new year and we made our resolutions, or personal promise, to do or not to do something. Usually, the resolution is an effort to better our life, or lifestyle, in some way based on our past experiences and expectations whether positive or negative as defined by our perspective and mindset, stresses or worries.

Adapted from The Weight of The Glass (author unknown)

On the last day of a psychology class, the professor wanted to teach one final lesson which she called “a vital lesson on the power of perspective and mindset.”  As she raised a glass of water, everyone expected they’d be asked the typical “glass half empty or glass half full” question. Instead, with a smile on her face, the professor asked, “How heavy is this glass of water I’m holding?”

Students shouted out answers ranging from eight ounces to a couple pounds.

She replied, “From my perspective, the absolute weight of this glass doesn’t matter. It all depends on how long I hold it. If I hold it for a minute or two, it’s fairly light. If I hold it for an hour straight, its weight might make my arm ache a little. If I hold it for a day straight, my arm will likely cramp up and feel completely numb and paralyzed, forcing me to drop the glass to the floor. In each case, the weight of the glass doesn’t change, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it feels to me.”

As the class shook their heads in agreement, she continued, “Your stresses and worries in life are very much like this glass of water. Think about them for a while and nothing happens. Think about them a bit longer and you begin to ache a little. Think about them all day long, and you will feel completely numb and paralyzed — incapable of doing anything else until you drop them.”

The moral: It’s important to remember to let go of your stresses and worries. No matter what happens during the day, as early in the evening as you can, put all your burdens down. Don’t carry them through the night and into the next day with you. If you still feel the weight of yesterday’s stress, it’s a strong sign that it’s time to put the glass down.

I am wishing you a Happy New Year and encouraging you to live with less stress and worries. Empty the glass!

ACC Liaison – Jack Csernecky

Just a gentle reminder to all our homeowners. It is our winter season and spring will be here shortly. As you arrange for your weekly/monthly lawn maintenance, keep in mind that the DOR does not permit any contract work on Sundays. (DOR Section 6, General Prohibitions and Requirements, Item No. 23).

So be sure to schedule lawn maintenance service for Monday through Saturday for the season. This does not preclude homeowners from performing their own lawn maintenance by themselves.

ACC Corner – Joe Rochel, ACC Chairperson

Hello again Fellow Carolina Shores Community homeowners.

We are still in the winter season and the ACC would like to help everyone know what issues are still in need of explaining for clarity.

There is no work allowed on Sundays by any trades as listed in the DOR Section 6, Subsection 23. This includes any landscapers, gardeners or lawncare personnel. Homeowners are allowed to work on their homes and yards on Sundays. Also, trades that work on your home are only allowed to work between the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday thru Saturday.  ALL HOMEOWNERS please note that any work violation by the trades will be a violation against the homeowner directly.

The ACC does not issue fines. Violations are directed to the CSPOA Board and their decision for a fine is based on the event or violation. This includes all new homes in construction.

When any Carolina Shores member fills out the “Request for Inspection” form, you need to fill out the top section for the violating Address, the Date and Reason for Request. The next two sections are to be left blank for the Office personnel to complete. The Member Request line needs to be filled out by the member filling out the form. This line of information is kept confidential.

The HVAC units need to be screened from view as stated in the DOR Section 6, Subsection 19. The screening needs to be placed so the unit cannot be seen from any angle when viewed from the street or recreation area. This will sometimes mean the sides of the unit will need to be screened. These restrictions are the same for above ground propane tanks and the generators. The office has guidelines for the type of screening needed.

Recreational vehicles or campers are not allowed to be parked on the homeowner’s property or driveway for repairs or maintenance without prior approval from the CSPOA office and only for short periods of time.

The Requests for Inspections or permits from the ACC cannot be set up for a specific time of the day. The days the ACC goes out for these items is only done on Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon. During periods of high volume there may be a delay for a week later. Please make sure to request a permit early enough to allow you time for the ACC to issue you the permit or inspection.

Book Discussion Group – Susie Riggs

stack of books isolated on white background

We discussed two excellent books at our January meeting. The first, Miss Benson’s Beetle by Rachel Joyce, is a fictional account of an ordinary woman who leaves her teaching job after thirty years to go on a madcap but emotional adventure in search of the elusive Golden Beetle of New Caledonia. As one member said, this story was “Sweet, witty, poignant. I laughed out loud in parts.”

Our second selection, Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger, is a novel about a young man, a small town and murder. It all begins in the summer of 1961 with the accidental death of a boy on the railroad tracks in the town of New Bremen, Minnesota. There is mystery, loss and death, but there is also forgiveness, discovery and courage in this stunning book which, according to one reviewer, is “pitch perfect”.

Our next meeting will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, February 17, in the POA clubhouse. Our reading selection will be Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt. If you live in Carolina Shores, love to read and enjoy talking about what you have read, please join us!

I would like to update this list. As of now, there are 59 people who had let me know they would be available to help with neighbors’ needs at times. I get few responses, mostly from the same 3-4 people. So, if you no longer wish to be on this list, please text me at 910-368-1070 or email me at dfp324@atmc.net

If you would like to stay on this list and would prefer to get notifications by email instead of through Nextdoor, please email me at dfp324@atmc.net and I will send out a group email when someone needs help in our community.

If you need help, please continue to let me know by calling the above number or my home at 910-575-6243.
